Ask the Car Expert – Ralph Garnett
I’m sure we have all seen an episode of the home improvement shows on TV. Problems after purchasing without an inspection. Your vehicle, even a used one, is likely the 2nd most expensive purchase you will make. You owe it to yourself to understand you rights & responsibilities when making that purchase. Every car dealer is required to use the same inspection form that must be completed by a JM technician. They must assess key vehicle systems and ensure that they “Meet Minimum Safe Limits”. They are required to provide you with a copy of this inspection that you must sign and they will keep on file.in addition, a Car Fax or similar report should be available that will show you if the vehicle has ever been in an accident or registered in another jurisdiction where rust or other factors may affect the value of the vehicle.
There is no requirement to record that the brakes or other components are “close to fail” or will need service soon. Records of service are also important. Spark plugs, timing belts even fluid services that should have been done can add up to a lot of $$ if you find yourself paying for them after purchase. Invoices for Maintenance should be available with only previous owner information redacted.
As with your house purchase, have a detailed pre-purchase inspection completed to protect your investment. It will be the best spent insurance you can buy.
