Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common and complex skin concerns, and it generally pops up after prolonged sun exposure. Let the qualified staff at Aesthetic Solutions help you prevent and treat your sun damage before summer!

What is Hyper-pigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation happens when melanin (pigment) is deposited due to the stimulation of melanogenesis. Melanogenesis is the process by which pigment is produced and duplicated in the skin – the end result of the immune system triggering an inflammatory response. This process is instigated by any hormonal trigger or cutaneous inflammation, such as heat, trauma or sun.

How can it be controlled?

1. Gently exfoliate – The closer the pigment lies to the surface of the skin, the darker it appears to the naked eye. Multiple professional treatments, including microdermabrasion and using gentle peeling agents like AHAs, gradually lift pigmentation, particularly stubborn sun damage or melasma.
2. Increase cell turnover – Using daily care products with retinol helps maintain the results of treatment because these products gently increase cellular proliferation and turnover, bringing healthy cells to the surface more quickly.
3. Inhibit melanogenesis – To discourage melanin production, products formulated with melanogenesis inhibitors should be used daily. This family of ingredients helps to stop the chain reaction that results in melanin deposition, and thus helps to stave off future discolouration. Some effective inhibiting ingredients include hydroquinone, kojic acid, lactic acid, and azelaic acid.
4. UV rays and others – Everyone should be using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ every day on any exposed skin. This is especially true for those treating hyperpigmented skin. If the skin is unprotected and exposed to UV rays, the process of evening out the skin will be significantly slowed or halted. In addition, treatments and the use of retinoids make the skin more sun sensitive.
